Denso Corporation began offering its battery passport service “DENSO Digital Product Passport Solution for Battery” on August 25, 2026, designed to help clients comply with the EU Battery Regulation and support battery traceability.
Under the EU Battery Regulation, the introduction of battery passports will become mandatory from February 18, 2027, covering EV batteries, LMT (light means of transport) batteries, and industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh. With less than six months remaining until the obligation takes effect, automakers and battery manufacturers subject to the requirement are under pressure to build compliant systems and prepare for full operational deployment.
The service generates a battery passport for each individual battery product based on the data model developed by Europe’s Battery Pass Consortium. Companies can efficiently collect battery information from their own core systems and suppliers, while end users can access battery information via a QR code assigned to the product. The service also includes an access rights management function that controls what information is visible depending on the user’s role—such as general consumers or economic operators—enabling both data-sovereignty-respecting security and regulatory compliance.
To ensure data reliability, the service draws on blockchain technology expertise that Denso has been researching and developing since 2017. By managing records in a chain, any alteration to a record breaks consistency with the records before and after it, making tampering theoretically infeasible.
In the battery passport space, European IT vendors and major automotive parts suppliers have already begun offering services. In Japan, the Automotive and Battery Traceability Promotion Center (ABtC)—established by automakers and parts industry associations as a general incorporated association—has built a data-sharing infrastructure covering CO₂ emissions and other metrics. Denso previously obtained ABtC’s “application certification” for its carbon footprint calculation app. With this latest launch, the company now offers its own service for generating and managing battery passports on a per-battery-product basis.
Going forward, Denso also has in its sights compliance with Digital Product Passports (DPPs) beyond battery passports as required under the EU Ecodesign Regulation. The service is designed to interoperate with multiple data platforms, and the company says it aims to expand into product categories beyond batteries in the future. As traceability information is established at the individual battery level, it may become easier to assess battery condition and make appropriate decisions on reuse and recycling, potentially contributing to greater efficiency in resource circulation.
