JX Metals Begins Sales of Rolled Copper Foil Made from 100% Recycled Copper, Matching Conventional Quality

JX Metals Co., Ltd. began full-scale sales in October 2026 of rolled copper foil made from 100% recycled copper raw material. The product is offered as part of the company’s “Cu again” series of 100% recycled copper products.

The company has built a resource circulation system in collaboration with its group companies and customers across the entire supply chain, and has so far offered 100% recycled electrolytic copper and high-performance copper alloy products made from 100% recycled raw material. This time, the scope has been expanded to include rolled copper foil.

The new product uses copper refined through a process that includes a dedicated smelting furnace newly introduced in 2025, using recycled raw material collected by group companies. While the company’s 100% recycled electrolytic copper uses a mass balance approach—allocating recycled-material attributes to products in proportion to the amount of recycled raw material input—this new product is manufactured by melting only recycled raw material, physically achieving 100% recycling of the copper raw material. The company’s rolled copper foil, known for its high flexibility and compatibility with fine-pitch circuits, requires copper with extremely few impurities compared to competitors’ products; however, the company says its proprietary impurity-separation technology at the core of its recycling process, combined with its operational know-how, has enabled stable production at a quality level equivalent to its conventional products. The company plans to pursue UL certification for the product going forward.

The company’s rolled copper foil offers excellent flexibility and durability thanks to proprietary crystal structure control technology, and is used as a material for flexible printed circuits (FPC) found in smartphones, wearable devices, and mobility equipment. The company holds an estimated 80% share of the global market for this application.

The company expects demand for rolled copper foil to grow, driven by the increasing sophistication and miniaturization of devices—including those incorporating AI functions—as well as growth in the wearable device market. In addition to demand for shielding materials in AI servers, the company also anticipates increased usage in industrial equipment and robotics.
